Trochentric Bursitis Of Hip Joint

Bursa is a sac that is filled with fluid, when this bursa becomes inflamed due to any reason it is called bursitis. There are many bursae in our body and works as a cushion between the bone and soft tissues, one bursa is present over the trochanter (outer edge of the hip) when this trochanter bursa becomes inflamed it is called trochanteric bursitis. Bursitis is a common cause of hip pain.

Causes

  • Trauma or injury after a fall, things which are hitting the sides of the thigh
  • Sleeping or lying on the same side for a long duration
  • Overuse or activities like stair climbing, cycling, or running
  • After any kind of hip surgery
  • Other diseases like arthritis or gout can also cause the bursitis
  • Bone spur formation
  • Postural abnormalities or deformities of the hip joint

Symptoms

  • Pain at the outer side of the hip joint
  • Pain aggravates in stair climbing or walking
  • Pain can radiate in the thigh
  • Swelling on the affected part
  • Stiffness
  • Tenderness over the outer side of the hip joint

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination and history of injury or any disease
  • X-ray is prescribed to check any bone abnormality
  • MRI for detailed and specific images

Treatment

  • Conservative:
      • Rest and icing on the affected area
      • Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce pain and inflammation
      • Injections of steroids to control the pain
      • Physiotherapy exercises will help in maintaining the joint range of motion and also helps in strengthening the muscles and flexibility
      • Assistive device: You can also use a stick or can to avoid putting weight on the affected side
