Golfer’s Elbow

Golfer’s Elbow Inflammation of the elbow tendons that connects the elbow to the forearm from the inner side (medial) of the elbow, is called Golfer’s elbow or medial epicondylitis. Golfer’s elbow is less common than tennis elbow. In this condition pain present at the medial or internal side of the bony bump of the elbow which is called the medial epicondyle and can radiate towards the forearm.

Causes

  • Damage to the muscles or tendons that present at the medial or internal side of the elbow
  • Forceful movement of the wrist and digits
  • Sports that have to throw or hitting activities
  • Poor weight lifting or improper lifting of any weight
  • Racket sports with the poor or wrong technique
  • Repeated and forceful movements ( carpentry or plumbing )

Symptoms

  • Pain in the medial or internal side of the elbow
  • Tenderness at the medial/inner side of the elbow
  • Pain increases with movements
  • Stiffness in the elbow joint
  • Pain may radiate towards the forearm
  • Tingling and numbness in the fingers ( small finger and ring finger)
  • Weakness of the hand and wrist or weak gripping

Diagnosis

  • Your history of incidents and physical checkup by your doctor. Your clinician will also ask about your symptoms in detail
  • X-ray is suggested to check for bone injury and bone spurs.
  • MRI is rarely prescribe

Treatment

  • Conservative
    • Medicines to reduce the pain and inflammation
    • Injections of the platelet-rich plasma.
    • Give rest and avoid activities that causing or increasing pain
    • Icing at the internal side or medial side of the shoulder
    • Use an Elbow supporter or elbow brace to reduce the strain from the muscles
    • Physical rehabilitation movements like stretching and strengthening of the elbow muscles
  • Surgery
      If conservative treatments are not helpful and symptoms are not reducing then surgical administration may require.
