Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and often affects the knees. Caused by aging and wear and tear of cartilage.
Grade of Osteoarthritis:
The Kellgren and Lawrence system is a method of classifying the severity of knee osteoarthritis (OA) using four grades of disease.
Grade 1- Doubtful narrowing of joint space and possible osteophytes lipping
Grade 2- Definite osteophytes, definite narrowing of joint space
Grade 3- Moderate multiple osteophytes, definite narrowing of joint space, some sclerosis and possible deformity of bone contour
Grade 4- Large osteophytes, marked narrowing of joint space, severe sclerosis and definite deformity of bone contour.
Causes
- Age- OA becomes more common with increasing age.
- Genetics- There may be some inherited tendency for OA to develop in some people.
- Obesity -This is because there is an increased load on the joints and a potential for more joint damage.
- Sex- Women are more likely than men to develop OA
- Previous joint injury, damage or deformity
- Occupational overuse of a joint
Symptoms
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Limitation in full movement of the joint
- Restricted Joint Range of Motion
- Creaking, clicking, or popping noises when the joint moves
- Other symptoms of RA include:
- Restricted activity of daily living
- An affected joint tends to look a little larger than
- No symptoms may occur. Quite a number of people have X-ray changes that indicate some degree of OA but have no, or only very mild, symptoms
